Austria’s most beautiful castle, Burg Hochosterwitz, is also well known in the United States, because this unique building inspired Walt Disney in his design of his Cinderella Castle. Protected by mighty walls and towers, the impressive medieval fortress Hochosterwitz dominates the surrounding landscape from its 150 m high crag. It has never been conquered. Many legends and myths are told even today of the sly and clever castle inhabitants and the cruel events which took place at the foot of the fortress.

If you wish to visit the castle, you can undertake the steady climb through the 14 imposing gates which lead to the summit. Or, if you are in a hurry, you could take the ‘Fürst-Max-Bahn’, a funicular, which will take you up in a minute or so. From the top you have an amazing panorama across the countryside. You can also view the imposing weapon collection in the armoury or enjoy a meal in the castle tavern.

How do you build a castle? This exciting question has found concrete answers in Friesach. To the south of the town, on a rocky outcrop in the woods, a new castle is being built using only traditional crafts and methods. Stone masons chip away at large blocks of stone, the smith tends his fire with manual bellows and a horse drawn wagon delivers the building materials to the site. Two men operate a winch to work the wooden crane so that heavy materials can be lifted to great heights, while stone masons and mortar mixers build the impressive walls of the future tower. You could imagine you have stepped into the scene of a medieval movie, but here the work is actually taking place.

Castle Taggenbrunn, majestically situated above the City of St. Veit and the River Glan, is surrounded by the vineyards of the Riedl family. The winery embraces both modern and traditional methods, and because of its sunny situation, a quality wine is guaranteed. Allow yourself to be spoiled in the restaurant or wine bar, where you can sample further fine vintages.

Beautifully situated among woods and lake, the Jacques Lemans Golfclub St. Veit- Längsee is surrounded by nature. This young but demanding golf course not only challenges its members, but also allows visitors and tourists to prove their mettle. Its central location and accessibility allow for a spontaneous round of golf. Enjoy both the beautiful setting and your round of golf in the heart of Carinthia.

The Roman town on the Magdalensberg is among the largest excavations of the Eastern Alps. Archaeologists have been digging here since 1948. The park encompasses four hectares (approx. 10 British acres) and its ruins demonstrate the extent of the former Roman settlement.
